Player of the Year David Crawford among 6 Mundy’s Mill players chosen to All-Region 4-AAAAAA baseball squad By Luke Strickland
JONESBORO — The 2017 All-Region 4-AAAAAA Baseball Team was announced Wednesday. All-Region selections are voted on by each of the respective head coaches in the region.
Mundy’s Mill High junior David Crawford was named Co-Player of the Year, splitting the award with Stephenson’s Anthony Johnson. Crawford led the Tigers to the second seed in the region, hitting .511 with 26 RBIs and 37 runs scored. The junior shortstop recorded a hit in 24 of Mundy’s Mill’s 26 games played.
Crawford was one of six Tigers selected to the squad, the most of any Clayton County team. Melvin Crawford was selected as a First Team outfielder. Melvin hit .488 with 21 RBIs and 31 runs scored, while also posting a 2.37 ERA in a team high 28.1 innings pitched.
Other Mundy’s Mill players named to the All-Region team include pitcher Lamar Lewis (2.31 ERA in 30.1 IP), infielder Fasion Carrington (.392 BA, 26 runs scored), outfielder Casey Grigley (.384 BA, 28 runs scored, 19 RBIs) and infielder/pitcher Dermus Strozier (19 runs scored, 3.30 ERA in 23.1 IP).
Drew High’s Ethan Phan was named Region Newcomer of the Year. In his freshman season, Phan posted a .455 batting average, scored 19 runs and drove in 16 runs. He also stole 18 bases.
Phan was joined on the All-Region team by teammates De’Andre Mitchell, Tyrek Preasley and Jalen Bowen. Mitchell was a First Team outfielder, hitting .492 with 25 RBIs. Preasley, an outfielder, led the Titans with a .510 batting average and 28 stolen bases, while Bowen was an Honorable Mention after hitting .467 with 17 RBIs.
Mount Zion was represented on the All-Region team by Stephen Cabrera and Rahmir Vaughn. Cabrera was a First Team Catcher, while Vaughn was a First Team Pitcher.
Jonesboro High’s Aaron Strickland was a First Team Utility selection. He led the Cardinals with a .432 batting average while posting a 3.45 ERA in 22 innings. Outfielder Jaaliq Brown was chosen as an Honorable Mention. Brown hit .357 for the Cardinals.
Tucker led all region teams with seven selections. Louis Davenport was named Pitcher of the Year and head coach Vincent Byams was voted Coach of the Year.
